Black History is American History!

As we come to the end of February, another month of remembering and celebrating Black History, it’s a great time to introduce our ‘Black Business Spotlight’. The Life Guru is dedicated to spreading peace, light and love by promoting self-love and building community. Knowledge is power; I am committed to giving our people (black folks) the resources and support needed to live a successful and happy life. 

Thanks so much to Jaz Ushry, owner and CEO of Blaque & Co., for agreeing to be featured as our first Black Business Spotlight! Blaque, an acronym meaning Believe in You, Love Yourself, Achieve Your Dreams, Quality Life, Unique, and Embrace You, is a hair oil company created to signify life’s journey.

Jaz’s idea was inspired by her own loc journey and wanting to share with others. Not knowing much about hair, but being the granddaughter of a beautician, Jaz remembered not only how good she felt being with her grandmother, but also how much love and care was poured into her while sitting in the salon chair.  Her grandmother always left her with words of encouragement emphasizing self-love and remembering that you are always enough - even when times are hard. 

Those hair memories with her grandmother resurfaced when Jaz began her loc journey. Throughout this journey, Jaz endured several stages of emotions related to beauty.  Positive affirmations helped Jaz overcome the negativity, and conquer the rough phases of life her grandmother once spoke about.  Understanding the strength and power needed to conquer the tough times, Jaz came up with the idea to combine the teachings and love of her matriarch into a hair oil. Blaque, as an affirmation, helped Jaz feel more confident in herself and wanted everyone, men, women and children, to feel the same about themselves.
